This is a game invented by some friends of James and should technically be called “The Oriel Challenge”. I don't think they'll mind if I adapt it to be called “The Liverpool Challenge”.
This game is mainly for practice because whoever hits bull at the end generally wins. This is for any number of people and the idea is to set yourselves targets that you have to try and hit. For example, it is customary to have 20's, 19's and then 18's. Each player throws 3 darts at the target. If you hit the target then you score the number of points you hit. For example, when aiming for 20's, if you hit the treble, single, single, you score 100 points. Similarly on the 19's and 18's you score 95 and 90 respectively. If target is not hit, then your score is halved (if you are on an odd number, remove 1 from your score and then half the value.) So if the target is simply 20, you only have to hit it with one of 3 darts to score.
Other popular targets are;
Any double - Tops and double 16 are common.
52 outshot - A standard outshot which is usually done with 20, double 16. If you hit this target, you score 52 points. If you don't hit it, your score halves. You can choose any outshot however.
A score of 64 - A good number as there are lots of options of hitting 64. The most popular route is either treble 8 or treble 16 with the 1st dart because if you hit either of the singles, you are left with a number that can be reached by hitting a combination of single and treble 8's and 16's with the remaining 2 darts. However, you can hit it anyway you want! You could also use any number as a target. If you hit the target, you score 64 points. If you don't hit it, your score halves
3 in a row - Hit 3 numbers in a row. If you hit 18, 19, 20 (but does not have to be in order), you score 57 points. If you hit 1, 2, 3 then you score 6 points. If you don't hit 3 in a row, your score halves. Are you starting to see the pattern?
Fish darts - Using all three darts, get a score less than 10. If you go over 10, you fail and your score halves.
Same Colour Darts - Get all three darts into either black, white, red or green segments. You cant have any dart in the same segment though. A 20, and 18 and a 12 is fine for 50 points. If you are cocky (and very good), you could get treble 18, treble 20, bull to score 164 points… If one of your darts strays into a different colour as your first, then your score is halved.
It is customary to finish with bull (and usually outer bull for penultimate target). Due to some of the targets getting increasingly difficult, people's scores generally get quite low towards the end so if you are the only one to hit bull, it is likely the addition of 50 points to your score means you win.
There are other targets that can be used for a laugh (and after a beverage or two...)
Monkey darts - You have to jump and throw the darts whilst in the air. You only score if all the darts hit the board. Trust me, its harder than it sounds!!
Underarm Darts - Simply throw darts underarm - you must hit board with all 3 darts.
Lying down darts - Lie down with your head touching oche. BE CAREFUL WITH THIS BECAUSE YOU CAN IMAGINE WHAT HAPPENS IF DARTS BOUNCE OUT OF BOARD… All three darts must hit the board.
Distance Darts - Set a distance you have to throw the darts from and hit the board with all three darts again. If you don't, your score is halved.
The beauty of this game is that you can choose whatever target you wish! So go on, think of some yourself.
